ST. LOUIS - It's time for the annual tax-free, back-to-school weekend shopping event.School supplies will be exempt from sales taxes starting Friday through Sunday.“The shoes and the backpacks and the clothing items – things that everyone is going to need,” Sean Phillips, senior marketing director for the West County Center, said.The tax-free holiday kicks off for the back-to-school shopping season, giving customers a chance to shop all the deals and save.“This is a great opportunity for everyone to save money because as you know, when you make purchases here at the mall, the tax is around 10%,” Phillips said. “So if you are buying a computer that’s $2,000, you’ll save that $200 in tax.”West County, Mid Rivers, and South County malls are taking part. Gaylord Rockies pays $87M in taxes that it had disputed

A defeat at the Colorado Supreme Court last month has forced the Gaylord Rockies Resort to pay years-old tax bills totaling $87 million that it had been disputing since opening.The massive hotel near Denver International Airport is the largest taxpayer in Adams County. It opened in 2018 and was sent a property tax bill of $25.3 million the next year.The hotel’s owner, Nashville-based Ryman Hospitality Properties, took issue with that. It claimed that the county had wrongly valued it at $676 million rather than $270 million due to a flawed methodology that includes income from restaurants and shops in a hotel’s value.The Gaylord appealed its 2019 tax bill to the county’s board of equalization, the Colorado Board of Assessment Appeals and the Colorado Court of Appeals. The onset of August brings two exciting celestial events involving full moons, the first of which will play out Tuesday and Wednesday evenings in Denver.It will be the first of two so-called “supermoons,” which are full moons that coincide with the lunar orb’s closest approaches to Earth in a given year, making them appear slightly larger than normal. And, when there are two full moons in the same month, the second is called a blue moon. That will occur Aug. 30.According to TimeandDate.com, a respected astronomy data site that focuses on cycles of the moon and sun, the last time there was a super blue moon was in 2009, and the next one will occur in 2032. After a short reprieve between April and July, Colorado’s gas prices are once again soaring above the national average.Over the past month, gas prices in Colorado increased nearly 20 cents, putting the state’s average at $3.93 — 17 cents above the national norm, according to data compiled by GasBuddy from 150,000 gas stations across the country.As of Tuesday afternoon, national gas prices hovered at $3.76, Colorado at $3.93 and Denver at $3.92, 16-cent difference. 3 convicted of abusing 'severely disabled' residents at Riverside care facility

Three people charged in a case of abuse and neglect of six "severely disabled" residents of an unlicensed senior care facility in Riverside have been found guilty, according to a news release from California's Attorney General.Joel Ombao, Ronnel Tiburcio and Nimfa Molina were found guilty of elder abuse for their roles in the neglect and mistreatment of residents at Secure Hands.The victims ranged in age from 32 to 66 and were found malnourished and "living in filth," without basic care in a house that did not have the adequate amenities or licensing to care for them.When investigators entered the facility, they found the victims emaciated and dehydrated and living in "squalor," Attorney General Rob Bonta said.Ombao is the owner of several hospice companies. Tuburcio was his assistant and Molina was a registered nurse at the facility. 2 O.C. residents charged with running $2.2M scheme tricking banks into cashing out mortgages

Two Orange County residents are facing federal charges after allegedly fraudulently obtaining more than $2 million by stealing the identities of homeowners and tricking banks into cashing out mortgages on those properties, according to the U.S. Justice Department.Thao Thi Kim Nguyen, 47, of Garden Grove, and Nghiep Chinh Nguyen, 55, of Westminster, were charged by a federal grand jury and pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Monday.Both are charged with one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud. Thao Nguyen is also charged with seven counts of bank fraud and three counts of aggravated identity theft, while Nghiep Nguyen is charged further with two counts of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, officials said.The defendants allegedly primarily targeted elderly Vietnamese Americans during their scheme.As part of their fraudulent behavior, the defendants obtained a type of mortgage that allows homeowners to convert home equity into cash by borrow...
