One day, Ayumi Takeuchi strolled into South Coast Plaza and inspiration struck. She saw a menu posted on the marquee at Populaire Modern Bistro. Listed underneath the duck dish description was the word: koji.Takeuchi stopped in her tracks. Koji is one of the key ingredients in making miso. She works in marketing and business development at Marukome U.S.A., which was founded in Nagano, Japan in 1854. It’s also Japan’s number one miso company. In 2007, Marukome opened its stateside headquarters in Irvine. In addition to miso, Marukome produces different lines of koji for chefs and homecooks. That was 10% more than the Sunday after Thanksgiving last year.Travel was relatively smooth despite the crowds. On Sunday, just 55 flights within, into or out of the U.S. were cancelled, according to FlightAware, a tracking service. SAN DIEGO -- A body was found late Monday morning inside a hole on a hill in Linda Vista, authorities confirmed. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department responded to calls of a person in a hole or a "tunnel" around 10:13 a.m. Monday. SDFD spent nearly an hour working to free the individual from the confined space. Man shot, boy stabbed in Lakeside SkyFOX was overhead as crews appeared to dig on a hillside in a vacant lot near Osler and Ulric streets in the Linda Vista neighborhood of San Diego.SDFD have confirmed one person was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:27 a.m. The body has been turned over to the San Diego Police Department. Solo-vehicle crash on I-805 prompts multiple lane closures

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Multiple lanes of the northbound Interstate 805 through Chula Vista were blocked Monday morning after a traffic collision, according to California Highway Patrol.The collision was reported around 10:45 a.m. Authorities said a truck pulling a trailer hit a wall along the interstate near the Palomar Street exit. According to CHP logs, crews had to rescue passengers from the vehicle. It is unclear how many individuals were in the truck at the time of the crash or if any sustained injuries. Remains of a WWII heavy bomber gunner identified nearly 80 years after his death

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Army Air Force gunner’s remains have been accounted for nearly eight decades after the heavy bomber he was flying in was shot down over France during World War II, military officials said Monday.Staff Sgt. Franklin P. Hall, 21, of Leesburg, Florida, was identified in July by scientists who used anthropological and DNA analysis, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said in a news release.Hall was assigned to the 66th Bombardment Squadron, 44th Bombardment Group (Heavy) in the European Theater in January 1944, officials said. The airman was the left waist gunner on a B-24D Liberator called “Queen Marlene” when it was attacked by German air forces near Équennes-Éramecourt, France. German forces found the crash site and recovered nine sets of remains, which were interred in the French cemetery at Poix-de-Picardie.
