The Spanish Supreme Court’s decision to suspend former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont from his public duties violated his rights, the U.N.’s Human Rights Committee has ruled. In the resolution, dated May 15, the committee concluded that the Court’s decision to suspend the MEP for “alleged crimes on the basis of public and peaceful acts” in 2018 didn’t meet the bar of “reasonableness and objectivity” and violated his right to be elected. A Fitchburg man already serving time for assaulting the family of a 5-year-old boy who was found dead in a suitcase is being charged in connection with the child’s murder.Alberto Sierra Jr., 32, the boyfriend of Jeremiah Oliver’s mother, was ordered held without bail after appearing in Worcester Superior Court on Thursday morning.Sierra is already serving 6 to 7 years in prison after pleading guilty to assault and child endangerment charges back in 2017.The arraignment comes as authorities continue to investigate the death of the 5-year-old Jeremiah, who was discovered to be missing in 2013 before the his body was found in a suitcase on the side of I-190 in Sterling the following year.The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later determined Jeremiah’s death to be a homicide, listing the cause of death as “homicidal violence of undetermined etiology.”Prosecutors said Sierra assaulted Jeremiah Oliver’s mother, Elsa Oliver, and two of his young siblings between March and D...

Economists: Mass. Growth Slowing, GDP Declines Forecast

Massachusetts squeaked out a smidgen of economic growth in the first quarter of 2023, slowing substantially from its late 2022 growth rate, and analysts are predicting GDP declines in the second and third quarters. Gross domestic product here rose at a 0.1 percent annualized rate in the first quarter, after rising at a 2.9 percent annualized rate in the final quarter of 2022, according to the new edition of MassBenchmarks, which is published by the University of Massachusetts Amherst Donahue Institute in cooperation with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Looking ahead, analysts said most of the state’s leading indicators are negative and their index projects state GDP declines of 0.1 percent in the second quarter and 0.6 percent in the third quarter.
