A suspected DUI driver who led authorities on a chase before a four-hour-long standoff was finally taken into custody late Thursday afternoon in Compton.The pursuit began as an attempted traffic stop shortly before noon in the area of Lime Street and Rosecrans Avenue where the authorities say the driver of the white pickup truck failed to yield.The driver eventually ended up in a dead end on Poplar Street next to a wash with deputies behind him and nowhere to go.Authorities surround a pursuit suspect in Compton on March 9, 2023. Walgreens pushes back on California contract cancellation over abortion pill plans

Walgreens said Thursday that California Gov. Big storm barrels toward a Big Sur school shuttered by landslides for months

Since early January, Ellen Hall has been teaching in an empty classroom.Hall’s students have been popping in and out of her online lessons since storms rocked Big Sur — and led to massive landslides — on Highway 1 late last year. More than two months later, half of the students at Hall’s school are still blocked from their classes, separated by immense levels of dirt, muck and rock.The situation could get worse this weekend as a new atmospheric river barrels toward Big Sur, with forecasters calling for up to 14 inches of rain. Richmond man shot and killed in city’s first homicide of 2023

RICHMOND — A 43-year-old man was shot and killed here Wednesday morning by a person who fired more than a dozen shots after spotting him in the front of a residence, police say.The victim, identified by authorities as Richmond resident Danny Barnes, was killed at around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, while standing outside a residence on the 2400 block of Aberdeen Way, police said. Barnes’ death marks Richmond’s first homicide of 2023.Police say it appears to be a targeted shooting; the suspect was driving by, apparently spotted Barnes, stopped the vehicle, and opened fire. Barnes died before paramedics could get there, authorities say.Police continue to investigate and have not made any arrests.Authorities say anyone with information can call Det. HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Texas has executed an inmate convicted of the drug-related killings of four people more than 30 years ago, including a woman who was 9-months pregnant.Arthur Brown Jr., 52, insisted he was innocent before receiving a lethal injection Thursday evening at the state penitentiary in Huntsville. He was condemned for the June 1992 slayings, which took place in a Houston home during a drug robbery.Authorities said Brown was part of a ring that shuttled drugs from Texas to Alabama and had bought drugs from Jose Tovar and his wife Rachel Tovar.Killed during the drug robbery were 32-year-old Jose Tovar; his wife’s 17-year-old son, Frank Farias; 19-year-old Jessica Quiñones, the pregnant girlfriend of another son of Rachel Tovar; and 21-year-old neighbor Audrey Brown.
