BOONE, N.C. (AP) — Joey Aguilar came off the bench to throw four touchdown passes and Appalachian State pulled away from Gardner-Webb for a 45-24 season-opening win on Saturday.Aguilar, a California junior college transfer, threw a 32-yard touchdown to Kaedin Robinson on his first pass, which put the Mountaineers up 14-10 late in the first half. His second touchdown was a 26-yard connection with Dashaun Davis for a 21-17 lead.Jayden Brown’s third touchdown, a 41-yard pass from Matthew Caldwell, put Gardner-Webb on top 24-21 but after Aguilar connected with Dalton Stroman for 43 yards and a 28-24 lead, the defense took over. From there the Bulldogs had a three-and-out and three-straight turnovers. (AP) — Alabama started quarterback Jalen Milroe in the opener Saturday night against Middle Tennessee State.Milroe emerged from a three-man battle in fall camp to at least win the first-game nod, beating out Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner and former five-star recruit Ty Simpson. That doesn’t mean the competition is over since the three were listed as co-starters on the depth chart.Milroe spent last season as backup to Bryce Young, who went on to be the first overall NFL draft pick. (AP) — Austin Reed threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Western Kentucky to a 41-24 win over South Florida in a season opener for both teams Saturday.Reed, last season’s FBS passing yards leader at 4,746, was 29-of-50 passing for 336 yards without an interception. (AP) — Davius Richard threw three touchdown passes and North Carolina Central rolled past Division II-member Winston-Salem 47-21 in a season opener on Saturday.Richard completed 15 of 22 passes for 236 yards with touchdowns of 40 yards to Latrell Collier, 12 yards to J’Mari Taylor and 86 yards to Quentin McCall on the way to a 37-0 halftime lead.
